    No retirement thoughts from Gormley

    by Michelle Fortune , 25 April 2012

Conor Gormley has no intention of hanging up his boots just yet and he is determined to fight his way on to the Tyrone team for the upcoming championship.

The retirements of Brian Dooher, Brian McGuigan, Enda McGinley, Kevin Hughes, Ciaran Gourley and Philip Jordan means that Gormley is only of the few remaining players from the 2003 Tyrone team and despite missing the start of the Allianz Football League, the 31-year-old insists he never considered joining them in walking away.

"I haven't any date or year for retirement," he declared. "You see the likes of Stevie McDonnell just retired a couple of weeks ago. You see Ryan McMenamin still going on, Brian Dooher going on until 36, so I've set no date yet.

"I'll see how it goes. Trying to get a place on the team is the problem at the moment."

Gormley sat out the early stages of the league following ankle surgery but he has followed Tyrone's progress and is delighted by the team's unbeaten start to 2012.

While some have been surprised at their 100 percent record, Gormley insists Tyrone have the talent needed to go far and he has warned against writing off the Red Hand's chances of lifting the Sam Maguire later this year.

"That's what we were aiming for, to win the McKenna Cup. The next goal was to win the league, and hopefully we are on track for that. The talent is in that squad to win every game.

"You look at the start of the year. A lot of people were writing us off with all the retirements. But it's given the likes of Niall McKenna, Peter Harte, Aidan McCrory and PJ Quinn a chance.

"All of them boys have come in now and done very well. They've shown what they can do, what we have in the locker.

"It's probably a bit of a transition, but I think them boys are well capable of stepping up to the plate, pushing on and pushing the team on and hopefully we can get honours out of it."
