    Lilywhites claim derby thriller

    by Setanta staff , 03 March 2012

Kildare got their first win of the season in Allianz Football League Division Two, beating Meath at the death in Navan.

Ollie Lyons scored the decisive point as Kieran McGeeney’s men won 0-18 to 2-11 in a game they had led for much of Saturday evening, only to trail after the Royals found two second half goals.

The defeat is the first suffered by Seamus McEnaney’s side, who were still on top of the second tier after Saturday’s games.

However, their good early season form was very much tested early on at Pairc Tailteann as Kildare, the side who defeated them twice in last summer’s championship, dominated them in midfield and scores from Tomas O'Connor, Daryl Flynn and Padraig O'Neill helped them into a 0-5 to 0-3 lead.

Two points remained the gap for most of the rest of the first half, with Eamonn O'Callaghan and Eoghan O'Flaherty impressing as they added to the Lilywhites’ tally.

Paddy Gilsenan and Chris O'Connor were among the scorers as McEnaney’s men stayed in touch, but they trailed by 0-8 to 0-6 at the interval.

Meath hit back after the break, however. Stephen Bray found his range, only for McGeeney’s men to bite right back and lead by three again, the third of their three-in-a-row a peach from O'Flaherty.

Again the Royals regrouped. Gilsenan raised a green flag to get them in front before another point from O’Flaherty levelled it, something Morgan O’Flatharta also did after Gilsenan raised a white flag.

O'Flaherty and O'Flatharta fired over scores as Kildare ran clear again, but a stinging Donnacha Tobin goal had the Royals on the brink of keeping their perfect record.

Alas for them, Kildare found two more scores - courtesy of O'Neill and Lyons - to decide the all-Leinster thriller.
